Sant Twa Ti Flè Programs

The children of Sant Twa ti Flè learn to read, write, calculate, and acquire fundamental knowledge in Haitian-Creole, their native language. They learn French as a second language (FSL) in accordance with the requirements of the Haitian Ministry of Education. They prepare students for the national exam of the end of primary cycle formerly known as Certificat d'Etudes Primaires, now 6th grade Education.

Learning occurs in an atmosphere of comprehension and active participation. Corporal punishment, fear, and humiliation are banished, while self-esteem, respect of the students’ peers, family, and environment are promoted. STTF is an egalitarian school environment without competition for grades and rank among students.

Parents and community members are welcome and the education of their children is free. They contribute their labor to maintain the school when needed, and are engaged in a variety of programs and initiatives addressing the community’s fundamental needs for education, communal infrastructure, and economic development.

Preschool

It was established in 2010 after the 3LFC team witnessed that on market days, as villagers took their crops to the market, younger children were left in the care of the older. The early childhood program exposes young children to early literacy in a fun and verbally stimulating atmosphere.

Health and Nutrition

STTF students and staff are provided a daily meal prepared by the kitchen staff. Rice, corn meal, and beans are provided by our partner Food for the Poor. TLFC encourages locals to provide vegetables and TLFC pays for spices, oil, utensils and propane gas for cooking in the new kitchen. Every year, the community receives the visit of a medical team. Doctors, nurses, social workers from the US volunteer to serve the community since Fort Royal does not have any medical facility. Our hope is to be able to offer these services on a more frequent basis in the near future.

Parent and Community Engagement

TLFC members hold parent meetings during their visits to Fort-Royal. Informational sessions focus on best practices in child development and discipline, coping with stress and traumatic events, health and hygiene. Parents are encouraged to serve as school volunteers, support the Sant Twa Ti Flè staff, and voice opinions and concerns about the school. They have played an active role in various development projects: agro-farming, water filtration, building of homes, roads, bridges, cleaning and maintenance of the school grounds.
